about

'Last Days: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack' is a proposed soundtrack album to an, as yet, unmade science fiction movie called Last Days.

The soundtrack is part of a project to reconstruct, revive, recall, and rewrite a screenplay called 'The Last Days of Lt. Buckley' which was written sometime in the early-to-mid 2000s and has subsequently been lost.

Remnants of the screenplay's philosophical themes are still floating around in my head all these years later. More so in fact. Issues of class, colonization, and ecological collapse were addressed in the original screenplay.

This soundtrack is an attempt to reconstruct the narrative of Last Days.

Each piece of music has a short description of what is occurring at the time within the film's narrative (also see below).

My aim here is to begin the process of reconstructing the screenplay with an ultimate aim to one day make the actual film.

Film Synopsis:

The original screenplay concerned a repair crew worker name Buckley on the generational ship Orion. The Orion is part of a fleet of vessels sent from Earth hundreds of years ago to find life in other solar systems. So far, the search has only turned up remnants of past civilizations.
While conducting routine maintenance on the outside of the ship an event (asteroid cluster, or some celestial phenomenon) forces Orion to make a light speed jump. Buckley is thrown into the cosmos at incredible speed. When he gains control, he realizes that Orion will not be back for him and that he is alone. Well, not quite. He has his in-built A.I computer OBIE to help him stay sane as he drifts across the cosmos and becomes the one and only human to witness signs of intelligent life. Unfortunately for humankind, these lifeforms are vacating our galaxy, leaving us forever alone.

Track by Track Narrative:

The Opening Crawl
The opening sequence of the Orion slowly moving through the edges of known space.

The Repair Crew
Repair worker Buckley performs routine maintenance on the outside of the Orion. The command crew receives information of an incoming cosmic event and must leave immediately. Buckley isn't giving any opportunity to return inside the ship before the Orion jumps to light speed.

Panic Spin
The Orion makes its light jump sending Buckley into a dizzying fast spin into the cosmos.

Radio Static
After steadying his violent spin, Buckley attempts radio contact with the Orion. Nobody answers.

OBIE's Theme
Buckley activates the in-suit artificial intelligence computer OBIE. Buckley doesn't necessarily trust this A.I but needs it to monitor his systems, try and establish contact, attempt to pin their position, and provide some company as he drifts alone.

Light Drift
The emptiness of space becomes apparent. Buckley thinks the Orion will return for him. OBIE thinks otherwise.

Stars in the Drift
Buckley and OBIE talk about Orion's mission to find life in the galaxy and how so far the search has only turned up ruins of past civilizations. Are we alone?

Earth Memories
Buckley and OBIE talk about Earth and what became of the planet as a mass exodus of generational ships took off in search of life. Buckley recalls memories of Earth even though he has never been there.

Drifting
Buckley realizes that humankind's search for life beyond its solar system has been a foolish endeavor and that the energies and resources it has taken should have been directed towards improving life on earth.

Power Down
After many days of drifting, Buckley’s life support and internal systems begin to lose power.

Watching the Watchers
As Buckley and OBIE collide with the edges of the galaxy, they encounter a huge armada of alien ships. There are thousands of them, all different in size and structure, indicating there are many different species. Buckley sees ships jump the boundaries of our galaxy into the emptiness. They are leaving. A mass exodus. Buckley realizes that humankind's infringement into the cosmos has made entire civilizations uproot and leave. The aliens have always been aware of humans and our history of conquest and colonialism has given us a bad reputation.

Falling Towards Eternity
With the realization that we were not alone in the cosmos, Buckley feels a moment of sadness and remorse. As he hits the galactic barrier his body and mind are smashed apart in an intense cluster fuck of spaghettification.

Closing Credits
The ending credits will also show scenes of an empty galaxy. This song may contain lyrics later on.
